When a woman experiences pelvic pain, it may be caused by fibroids, ovarian cysts, adhesions, endometriosis (uterine tissue found outside the uterus), and even infections that don’t respond to drug therapy. Laparoscopic surgeries are performed by Dr. Zikira for patients in our region to examine and treat many of these problems. Laparoscopy surgery is also used in other treatments such as the evaluation of infertility, or sterilization and assistance in treatment and diagnosis of entopic pregnancies and hysterectomy.

What is Laparoscopy surgery?

Laparoscopic surgery is a surgical procedure performed using a laparoscope, a thin surgical instrument that looks similar to a telescope on a flexible tube, inserted into the abdomen in or near the navel so the area can be viewed. Other instruments may be inserted through the incision or the scope to obtain tissue samples or perform additional procedures.

How is the Laparoscopy performed?

Dr. Zikira performs Laparoscopic surgery for the treatment and diagnosis of pelvic pain. Many of the Laparoscopy procedures are performed on an outpatient basis while some may require an overnight stay. The anesthesia used depends on the type of procedure and determines the length of the stay.

After the anesthesia, a small incision is placed in the abdomen below or in the navel, carbon dioxide gas is then pumped into the abdomen so the pelvic organs can be seen more clearly when the laparoscope is inserted. After the surgery the instruments are removed, the gas is released and the wound closed. Recovery depends on the procedure performed.
